Wasabia Japonica has been cultivated in Japan since the tenth century, and the farmers involved in its production, much like producers of the finest prosciutto, the most delicate cheeses or the most prestigious wines, form impenetrable Masonic Lodge phalanxes through which foreigners and aspiring entrants to the field are unwelcome. Also referred to as a type of Wasabi.
