Choosing colour is a personal and subjective pursuit. There is no right or wrong when it comes to colour, it’s all about preference. Having said that, there are some rules of thumb and tips that can help to guide your choice and help you create a specific look.

Do you have a favourite colour? A feeling you want to create in the room? Do you want to go bold and dramatic or sophisticated and understated? The answers to these questions can give you a starting point for your scheme.

The psychology of colour tells us that different colours can evoke different feelings. For instance if you are decorating a living room and want to create a tranquil space to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then a natural palette of pale blues or greens will help to create that effect.

Here are some of the moods that certain colours are said to create:

  • White – pure, clean
  • Pink – nurturing
  • Red – excitement, bold
  • Orange – warmth, optimism
  • Yellow – sunny, clarity
  • Green – peaceful, balance, growth
  • Blue – trust, strength
  • Purple – creative, imagination
  • Grey – balance, calm

You should also take into account the strength and depth of colour that you would like to use. Going back to our earlier example of using pale blues to create a calm, tranquil space. If you replaced those pale blues with deep, rich blues, the space would still feel tranquil but would have a much stronger look and a cocoon like feel.
